Newsletter June 2015

ACHEMA – World Forum and 31st Leading Show for the Process Industries

The ACHEMA trade fair takes place from 15 to 19 June 2015 at the Frankfurt Fair in Germany and is the world forum for chemical engineering and the process industry, an innovations' platform and technology summit, a trend-setting meeting point, the take-off for investment decisions and a international network of experts and executives.

One of the focal topics 2015 is Industrial Water Management, which involves many areas of the process industry and the associated apparatus and plant engineering sector. Nowhere are apparatus and plant engineering so comprehensively presented and represented in process-oriented exhibition groups than at ACHEMA.

Even the popular press makes use of the water footprint concept

As a heat wave is reaching Hungary, an increasing number of articles appear focusing both on the short term (how to cope with heat waves, especially in an urban setting) and the long term (current heat waves fit into a pattern of rising global temperatures, a changing climate).

The most widely read internet based newspaper of Hungary, Index.hu, has used this occasion to educate its readers on how to adjust their everyday behaviour to reduce their environmental footprint.

With respect to the water footprint, the article advises: “...A classical example is that of water, often wasted on the household level. We can easily cut back on our water consumption if we take shorter showers, turn off the tap when not in use, or flush the toilet with grey water. Nevertheless, if after our short shower we walk down to the store to buy a kilogram of beef, then we indirectly consume 15,000 liters of water. This seems shockingly high, but agriculture consumes 70% of the World’s freshwater use and freshwater resources become ever more precious as the climate is changing.”

UNEP-WULCA group activities

The work of UNEP-WULCA group - a Life Cycle Initiative group project on the assessment of Use and Deplation of Water Resources within LCA - on the definition of a common indicator to address the issue of water scarcity made a big step forward in the last Barcelona meeting held in May 2015.

The experts will soon deliver to the stakeholders a draft of the method to quantify the impact of product, processes and organization on water resources. After a few months of public consultation and application in the field, the final version will be then released.

Promotion activities coming from Wroclaw UWFLab

The representatives of two project partners from Wrocław – Municipal Water and Sewage Company (MPWiK) and University of Environmental and Life Sciences, gave an interview to Wrocław web portal, in May. The paper is named “The scientists and the footprint of blue, green and grey water” and can be found here.

In the paper the main idea of the project is presented, the participation of three different European cities is described, and the general results for Wrocław are visualized and discussed. The paper aims to make the citizens aware of the spread of the water footprint in the city and points out the dominance of the grey water footprint in the city center. This is the effect of covering the area with impermeable pavement. In the paper the example ecological solutions for local rainwater management are presented such as those implemented in Wrocław Stadium.

More general paper promoting the project was published in one of the greatest Polish web portals – ”Wirtualna Polska”. The title of the internet paper is ”The results of the research show clearly: too much water is wasted in Wrocław”. The aim of the paper is to increase the awareness of the citizens of the need for saving water and implementing relevant technologies and design solutions. The paper can be found here.
